Why this is worth knowing

A phone screen is small, and holding a phone up to your ear or in front of your face for a long chat isn't always comfortable. WhatsApp's Call Transfer feature lets you shift an ongoing call from your phone to WhatsApp Web or the Desktop app on your computer — or the other way round — mid-conversation, with the call continuing the whole time.

Before you start

  • Make sure WhatsApp is set up on both devices — the phone you're calling from, and the computer you want to move to

  • For the computer, this means either WhatsApp Web (open web.whatsapp.com in a browser and scan the code with your phone once to link them) or the WhatsApp Desktop app

  • Both devices need to be signed into the same WhatsApp account — this is normal, as WhatsApp Web and Desktop simply mirror your phone's account rather than being separate

Transferring the call

  1. While you're on a call on your phone, open WhatsApp on your computer (it doesn't need to be doing anything else — just open and signed in)

  2. Look for a transfer or "move call" prompt on your phone's call screen, or a notification on the computer inviting you to continue the call there

  3. Tap or click to confirm the transfer — the call carries on without dropping, now with audio and video on the computer instead

  4. To move it back to your phone later, the same process works in reverse

If it doesn't appear

This feature rolled out gradually, so if you don't see a transfer option yet, make sure WhatsApp is fully updated on both devices via the App Store, Google Play, or the WhatsApp website. It may simply not have reached your version yet.

A more comfortable way to catch up

Little conveniences like this add up. A five-minute check-in on the phone can turn into a proper catch-up worth settling in for — and now you don't have to choose between comfort and continuing the call.
