In this guide, we'll walk you through everything from downloading Zoom to making your very first call — in plain, simple English.
What is Zoom?
Zoom is a free app that lets you make video calls with one person or a whole group at once. It works on computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Unlike FaceTime, it works on all devices — not just Apple ones — so it's great for calling people who have different types of phones or computers.
What You'll Need
• A computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone
• A Wi-Fi connection
• A free Zoom account (we'll show you how to set one up)
• The email address of the person you want to call
Step 1 — Download Zoom
On a computer or laptop: Open your internet browser and go to zoom.us. Click the big blue button that says 'Download Zoom'. Follow the instructions to install it — it only takes a minute or two.
On a tablet or smartphone: Open the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or Google Play Store (Android), search for 'Zoom', and tap Install.
Step 2 — Create a Free Account
Once Zoom is installed, open it and click 'Sign Up Free'. Enter your email address and follow the steps to create your account. Zoom will send you an email to confirm — just click the link in that email and you're all set.
Step 3 — Sign In to Zoom
Open Zoom and click 'Sign In'. Enter the email address and password you just created. You'll now see the Zoom home screen.
Step 4 — Start a New Call
To call someone, click the orange 'New Meeting' button. This opens your camera so you can see yourself. Then click 'Invite' at the bottom of the screen and enter the email address of the person you want to call. They'll receive an invitation and can join with one click.
Step 5 — Joining Someone Else's Call
If someone has sent you a Zoom invitation, they'll usually send you a link. Simply click that link and Zoom will open automatically and connect you straight to the call. You may be asked to click 'Join with Video' — go ahead and click that.
Step 6 — During the Call
At the bottom of the screen you'll see a few buttons:
• The microphone icon — click it to mute or unmute yourself
• The camera icon — click it to turn your video on or off
• The red 'End' button — click this when you're ready to finish the call
Tips for a Great Zoom Call
• Sit facing a window or lamp so your face is well lit
• Make sure your Wi-Fi is switched on before starting
• If you can't hear anyone, check your volume buttons on the side of your device
• Don't worry if you accidentally press the wrong button — you can always unmute yourself or turn your camera back on
Zoom might feel a little daunting at first, but once you've had one call you'll wonder what you were worried about. Why not arrange a test call with a family member this week?
