What is FaceTime?

FaceTime is Apple's free video calling app. It lets you see and hear the person you're calling in real time — perfect for catching up with family, seeing the grandchildren, or having a proper face-to-face chat with friends who live far away.

It works over Wi-Fi or mobile data, so there are no call charges — even if you're calling someone in another country.

What You'll Need

• An iPhone, iPad, or Mac

• A Wi-Fi connection (or mobile data)

• The phone number or Apple ID email address of the person you want to call

• The person you're calling must also have an Apple device

Step 1: Find FaceTime on Your Device

Look for the green icon with a white video camera on it — that's FaceTime. It's usually on your home screen. If you can't spot it, swipe down from the middle of your screen and type 'FaceTime' into the search bar.

Step 2: Open FaceTime and Tap 'New FaceTime'

Once you've opened the app, you'll see a green button at the top that says 'New FaceTime'. Give it a tap.

Step 3: Type In the Person's Name or Number

A search box will appear. Start typing the name of the person you want to call — if they're saved in your contacts, their name will pop up. Tap their name to select them. If they're not in your contacts yet, you can type in their phone number or their Apple ID email address instead.

Step 4: Tap the Video Camera Button

Once you've selected who you want to call, you'll see two buttons — a phone icon for a voice call, and a video camera icon for a video call. Tap the green video camera icon to start a FaceTime video call.

Step 5: Wait for Them to Answer

Your screen will show 'FaceTime...' while it connects. When the other person picks up, you'll be able to see and hear each other straight away. You'll see their face take up most of the screen, with a small picture of yourself in the corner.

Step 6: Ending the Call

When you're ready to finish, simply tap anywhere on the screen to bring up the controls, then tap the red button to end the call.

A Few Handy Tips

• Sit facing a window or lamp so your face is well lit — it makes a big difference to how you look on screen

• If the sound is too quiet, use the volume buttons on the side of your device to turn it up

• If the picture freezes or the sound cuts out, it usually means the Wi-Fi connection is a bit slow — try moving closer to your router.

And that's it! FaceTime really is that simple once you know where to look. Why not give someone a call today?
