'Is it really free?' is one of the questions we're asked most often, and it's a sensible one. Many of us are on a fixed income, and nobody likes a surprise on the bill.

So let's clear it up, in plain English, once and for all.

The short answer

WhatsApp, FaceTime, Zoom and Google Meet don't charge you to make a call. There's no fee per minute, and it doesn't matter whether your family is in the next town or on the other side of the world.

But there's a small catch. These calls travel over the internet, and the internet connection is what you pay for, one way or another.

Wi-Fi or mobile data: what's the difference?

Think of it like water. Wi-Fi at home is like a tap connected to the mains. You pay a monthly bill, and you can usually use as much as you like.

Mobile data is more like a bottle of water that comes with your phone plan. You get a certain amount each month, and when it's gone, it's gone. Some plans are unlimited, and some aren't.

A video call uses much more data than a text message or a voice call, because it's sending moving pictures as well as sound. At home on Wi-Fi, that doesn't matter. Out and about on mobile data, it can add up.

How to tell which one you're using

  1. Look at the top of your phone or tablet screen.

  2. Spot a little fan-shaped symbol? That's Wi-Fi. You're connected to your home broadband (or whichever Wi-Fi you've joined), so the call won't touch your mobile data.

  3. No fan symbol, but you see letters such as 4G or 5G? You're on mobile data.

If you aren't sure, ask a family member to check with you once. It takes about a minute, and then you'll know for good.

Do you actually need to worry?

For many people, no. Most home broadband packages in the UK have no data limit, so calling from the sofa won't cost you a penny extra. Many mobile plans also come with generous or unlimited data. Your best bet is to look at your latest bill or ring your provider and ask one simple question: 'Is my mobile data limited?'

Four easy ways to use less data

  1. Call on Wi-Fi whenever you can. It's the simplest tip, and the most effective.

  2. In WhatsApp, turn on 'Use less data for calls': open WhatsApp, go to Settings > Storage and data, then switch on 'Use less data for calls'. This makes calls a little lower in quality when you're not on Wi-Fi, but they use less data.

  3. Check which apps are allowed to use mobile data. On an iPhone, look under Settings > Mobile Service (or Mobile Data). On Android, look under Settings > Network & internet > Data usage. The wording varies between phones.

  4. Turn the camera off for a chat that doesn't need it. A voice-only call uses far less data than video.

Calling family abroad, or calling from abroad

One of the best things about video calls is that talking to family in Australia or Spain costs no more than talking to someone down the road, provided you're on Wi-Fi.

The thing to watch is when you're the one travelling. Many UK mobile networks now charge for using your data in Europe and further afield. Before a trip, ask your provider about roaming charges, and stick to hotel or café Wi-Fi for your calls.

What if the call keeps freezing?

A choppy picture usually means a weak Wi-Fi signal, rather than anything you've done wrong. Try sitting closer to the router (the box your broadband comes through), and make sure nobody else is streaming a film at the same moment.

If you have a room in the house where the signal is always poor, a Wi-Fi extender can help. It's a small plug-in gadget that boosts the signal. This is only worth buying if you really do have a weak spot, so try the free fixes first. If you decide to get one, I may earn a small commission through the link below, at no extra cost to you. Before you schedule: quick checks

  • iOS 27 (SFS-93): confirm 'iPhone 11 and newer' on apple.com/uk and look at the steps on your own iPhone, as menu names can shift slightly.

  • Clocks (SFS-94, SFS-96): the clocks go back at 2am on Sunday 25 October 2026. Android menu wording varies by brand.

  • Shopping (SFS-95, Blog 1): add your blog link in place of [LINK TO BLOG 1], and your Bitdefender affiliate link plus current price in the 'extra layer' section. Delete that section if you'd rather not include it.

  • WhatsApp (FCS-93, FCS-94, FCS-95, Blog 2): try the menu paths on your own phone before scheduling. WhatsApp moves things around.

  • Blog 2: add your blog link in place of [LINK TO BLOG 2], and choose a Wi-Fi extender if you want the Amazon link. Delete the paragraph if not.

  • Report Fraud replaced Action Fraud in January 2026, so Blog 1 uses the new name. Check the wording is still current on posting day.
